How do I maintain my travertine tables?

Facts.

Travertine is a beautiful freshwater limestone and coarser in texture than marble. The layered structure is created because lime in hot springs creates a new layer every time. There is a story behind every layer! Branches and leaves remain between these layers. When this digests, the signature pores are caused! A fine example of nature's work. At Mia Carrara there is the option to also fill these pores, but to be fair, these pores do give character to your product. A nice little fact for when the conversation turns to your beautiful table again: the architects of the Colosseum and the Sacré-Coeur adored travertine and chose this type of stone as the basis for their architectural masterpieces. But travertine can also be admired publicly in our own capital: the National Monument on Dam Square is also made of travertine.

Take care!

  • It seems obvious, but don't drop your product.

  • Please be careful with hot dishes or pans: always use a coaster.

  • Try to avoid sharp objects, which can cause scratches.

  • Be careful with point load, too much weight on one point can break your product.

  • Avoid large temperature changes, so that no thermoshock can occur.

  • NEVER use corrosive, acidic or chemical agents such as ammonia, bleach and lemon. This can cause damage. Also watch out with fruit juices and coffee. Spilled anyway? Remove this immediately and dab your product with a cloth and clean the surface.

  • Never use abrasive agents during cleaning, but opt for soft cloths.

  • Travertine is a porous type of limestone and therefore has a low acid resistance. It is therefore important that you use cleaning agents with a neutral pH value when cleaning travertine.

  • If you have spilled hardening materials such as candle wax, chewing gum or grease, it is best to scrape them off with a plastic scraper. Clean immediately afterwards with a pH-neutral cleaning agent.

The finishing touch.

Our tables have different types of finishes. To be as maintenance-friendly as possible, we supply most products polished with filled pores. This means you have much less chance of damage.

Some products also have a matte finish. This has a different look. With the matte variants, we always maintain the pores.

Would you like your product in a different version? Then contact us! The options are:

  • Matte, with pores

  • Matt, without pores

  • Polished (glossy), with pores

  • Polished (glossy), without pores

All your perfect imperfections.

All our products are unique. The products may differ from the images. We only work with the highest quality travertine. The pores can be more present in one product, the other product can have irregular veins. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee this, but we always strive for the perfect product!

Craftmanship.

We at Mia Carrara have our products produced by a true craftsman. He makes a selection of the highest quality travertine, which he then processes into your dream product. It is a true craft and our stoneworker is only satisfied with a perfect result.
